I usually try to avoid love triangles but I do not mind it so far in The Selection. This is probably because Cass has focused on developing the only relationship between Maxon and America. Due to this, however, Maxon's character is much more developed than Aspen's. Maxon has his own motivations and goals, and his life does not start and end with America: "When I'm not with you all, I'm organizing troops, making laws, perfecting budgets . . . and all on my own these days, while my father watches me stumble in my own stupidity because I have none of his experience" (Cass, 187). Meanwhile, Aspen's world seemed to revolve around America. The reader gets a hint of his relationship with his family when America is talking to his mother, but for the most part it seems like his only purpose is to create tension. Does anyone else feel the same way? Is there anything I'm missing about Aspen's character

  1. I have to agree with you there. I am not sure how I really feel about Maxon and America's relationship. I'm not sure if he is just a rebound for America or if she really has true feelings for him. It's hard for me to buy the whole one can be in love with more than one person thing or feel the same way about two different people. It makes me question how strong that love really is if after you get mad at them you can start liking someone else. So, I can see how Maxon is just there to add tension, because without any obstacles in their relationship it would be a very boring read. I could, however, have this whole thing reversed and America is truly in love with Maxon which would make Aspen the tension maker.

  2. I agree with you when it comes to the first book in the series. Once Aspen arrives at the castle it seems that in the end Aspen and America will end up together since they have had an on going relationship for about two years and therefore it seems that Maxon will just be there to add tension. But, keep in mind that the first book of the series is mainly the book that develops the plot and the characters of the story to give the reader an idea for what comes next. There is always the possibility that in the next few books to come, there could be more emotional development between Maxon and America. I don't know I get this feeling that in the end, Maxon and America will develop strong feelings for each other and she will be the one. I mean I think that there relationship is in just the first few stages of what will eventually will become more. I mean I'm pretty sure it takes a little while for feelings of love to be established in everyday life let alone a book where Maxon has to get to know multiple girls at a time. I'm going to give it time, because given these types of books that I have read in the past, I have a strong feeling that Maxon and America are going to end up together and Aspen will be the one causing tension.
