The Selection Reading
The reading so far has been interesting. America and Maxon's relationship is developing and Maxon's personality is showing more. For me I wasn't expecting much from Maxon, but he's starting to be more then just a plain character. Unlike Aspen, who I forgot about, until America brought him up in the story. I wish I was given more information about the castes and what each of them do in the society, though from reading more chapters I realized that you figure out the castes in little pieces of information. The caste information would have helped me in the beginning, since I was confused about the numbers. I'm hoping for more character development as the story continues on.

I agree with what you said about the cast system. I wish the author would break away from the main plot every now and them to explain the politics of America's country. I'm especially interested in the rebel attackers and their motivations.
ReplyDeleteI kind of liked having to figure out the history behind the caste system and the country of Illéa. I approached it like detective and tried to figure out what each caste was based on by the little bits of information I received. I can see how it could be annoying and a bit confusing though. Especially when the narrator, America, speaks as if the reader has all this information. One thing I have not figured out about the caste system is how Celeste is a model. I thought the higher the number the more that caste benefited the government. I'm confused how modeling fits that criteria.
ReplyDeleteTo clarify your confusion with Celeste, first, the lower the number, the higher ranked you are in the caste system. And secondly, the higher castes only benefited the country when it first started recovering and developing. The more the family gave, the higher they were ranked in the caste system. Now, a few generations later, the higher castes really don't have to give anymore to the government because they are no longer a developing country but it is stable. The only time the castes ever benefited the government was when the country of Illéa was in the beginning stages of the country. So yeah Celeste is a model because that's one of the jobs that are offered if you are a 2. But in the end, the castes only helped the government when it was developing.
DeleteI thought the caste system was the lower the number, the higher the caste. Again, a little too hunger games for me. Each number having its own set of occupations. Even the lower numbers in Hunger Games were more in line with the Capital.
